ROTTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS - 23 JANUARY 2024 - 2023 was a landmark year for Iberian renewables. Spain generated over 50% of its power through renewables, while 61% of the energy consumed in Portugal was supplied by renewable sources. If these Iberian renewable energy pioneers want to maintain their market pace, they’ll have to face market challenges and (regulatory) hurdles distinct to the peninsula. The Solarplaza Summit Iberia will unite regional and international PV professionals to discuss the challenge at hand and exchange the knowledge and network crucial to meeting it. 

With 8.2 GW of new PV systems, Spain became the second-biggest European solar market in 2023. Ambitions are skyrocketing, with both countries projected to remain gigawatt markets in 2024, while both countries have also significantly upgraded their NECP targets. More than doubling their initial goals, Spain and Portugal are now targeting respectively 76 GW and 20.4 GW of solar capacity by 2030.

With a unique, unified power market (MIBEL), and more grid interconnection reinforcements under development, the Iberian market largely presents a unified power market with a big overlap in both its market challenges and opportunities.
