Solar energy capacity in the Iberian Peninsula has increased rapidly in recent years. While Spain has installed more than 8 GW of solar capacity annually over the last two years - and reached 35.6 GW of operational solar capacity in 2023-, installation rates have been modest in Portugal with the cumulative solar capacity standing at 3.9 GW.1,2 Nevertheless, Portugal has one of the most ambitious renewable targets within the EU, with a revised NECP 2030 solar target of 20.4 GW, which is more than double its previous target of 9 GW.
