Press Release
Explore Finnish PV & storage market opportunities at the Solarplaza Summit Finland 2024
ROTTERDAM - 22 July 2024 - Having crossed the 1 GW mark of cumulative PV capacity last year, the Finish solar market finds itself on a steady growth path. Doubling from a 200 MW market in 2022 to a 400 MW market in 2023, the country is rapidly ramping up its annual volume and could reach as much as 7 GW of total solar capacity by 2030. Aiding the industry in realizing its potential, the second edition of the Solarplaza Summit Finland: PV & Storage will provide a critical platform for high-level knowledge sharing and network building amongst local and international renewable energy players.
The Solarplaza Summit Finland: PV & Storage, hosted in Helsinki on 28 November 2024, will allow attendees to gain crucial insights into the Finnish PV and storage market and establish connections with both key local and international players, including representatives from prolific IPPs, project developers, asset managers, and investors. The event program is tailored towards high-level knowledge sharing through presentations and panels featuring leading industry figures and subject matter experts, supplemented by bountiful opportunities for networking and establishing new business connections.
Finland's PV market got its first beginning by focusing on small off-grid systems, and only began moving towards medium-scale grid-connected PV systems around 2010. Significant growth kicked in by 2022, when Finland added 200 MW of new solar capacity. Last year (2023), the country’s solar market event doubled in size, as it connected 400 MW of new PV projects to the grid, thus crossing the mark of 1 GW of cumulatively installed solar PV capacity. Now, the market is on track to continue its accelerated growth path. Fingrid, Finland’s TSO, estimates that as much as 7 GW of PV capacity could be operational in Finland by 2030.
Big deals keep being announced, as international independent power producers and leading investors in the renewable energy market are filling up swelling pipelines and announcing the construction of utility-scale PV plants in the country. Just last month, seven large-scale projects - for a grand total of 213 MW of new capacity - signed grant agreements with the European Commission’s CINEA body to advance to further stages of development. Though perhaps a few steps behind on other major European markets, the rapid expansion of intermittent renewable energy sources will - in due time - cause grid capacity issues in Finland. To make sure the market’s growth won’t lose steam, it’s of crucial importance to already consider the business case of including energy storage into the project development mix. Therefore, battery energy storage solutions will also already be part of the discussion of Solarplaza’s event in November.
While still being considered an emerging market in terms of installed renewable energy capacity, this is the right moment for prospective players to step into the Finnish PV and storage market to grasp its full potential and, of course, for established market leaders to further solidify and cement their positions. The Solarplaza Summit Finland: Solar & Storage marks the international PV conference organizer’s second event in Finland and ninth overall in the Nordics.
