Pushing Greece’s Solar Market Past Its Targets Early

Returning event to unite local & international Greek PV market stakeholders

ROTTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS - 25 July 2023 - The Greek energy market is on a trajectory of steep growth, driven by factors like the increasing demand for solar PV installations, ongoing and upcoming investments in solar energy projects, regulatory reform, as well as novel solutions and technologies. Last year, the country added a record 1.36 GW of new solar capacity to the grid. Will the market be able to keep up this pace? During the 5th edition of the Solarplaza Summit Greece, market experts and industry professionals will gather to answer that burning question.

According to the EU's National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP), over 80% of Greece's electricity mix will be made up of renewable sources by 2030. Solar PV is to take a leading role in that and was slapped with an upgraded target of 14.1 GW of PV capacity by 2030. Many even judge that target as not being ambitious enough. Taking 2022’s new capacity (1.36 GW) into consideration, Greece’s cumulative solar capacity ended up just shy of 5.5 GW by year’s end. At this accelerated pace, according to SolarPower Europe’s forecast, the cumulative solar capacity in Greece could already surpass 15 GW by the end of 2026

In order to facilitate the energy transition, accelerating diversification and expanding energy storage solutions have become vital priorities, which is also demonstrated by the 8 GW storage target set for 2030. However, even though the market is booming, obstacles such as market volatility and cannibalization, operational dysfunctions, shortage of skilled workforce for the execution of increasing projects, and ongoing grid connection and licensing issues make for a rocky road ahead.

The 5th edition of the Solarplaza Summit Greece will facilitate high-level discussions on vital solar PV market trends and challenges to inspire joint solutions from local and international key market players across the RE value chain. The high-level industry platform will once again provide PV professionals with the invaluable opportunity to create valuable business connections, and acquire in-depth knowledge and know-how, thus acquiring the tools to help shape the future of the Greek solar PV market.
