Keeping Nordic Solar Market Development on its Steep Growth Path

Solarplaza Summit Nordics to connect and inspire the regional PV market players

ROTTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS - 12 MARCH 2024 - The Nordic solar power markets have seen a remarkable growth trajectory in recent years. Having jointly crossed the 3 GW mark in 2020, the region already boasted 10 GW of combined PV capacity by the end of 2023. The Danish, Swedish, Finnish, and Norwegian solar markets share many characteristics and regional players but also have their distinct sets of challenges and opportunities. The Solarplaza Summit Nordics, returning for the fifth year in a row, provides the key platform for regional insights, strategies, and high-level networking.

Denmark’s PV market was the first one to take off and is still leading the pack, with around 5 GW of cumulative PV capacity and a strong utility-scale PV market that drove 60% of last year’s installations. The Swedish solar market has been catching up, though, and crossed the 4 GW mark in 2023. Here, the utility-scale segment is still ramping up, while C&I and residential rooftops have been solid performers. SolarPower Europe has forecasted that both these markets should reach around 20 GW (each) of PV capacity by 2030. Finland is on a similar curve. After a slower start, it reached 1 GW of total installations in 2023, and has been forecasted to have increased that number tenfold by the end of the decade. Norway traditionally looked to hydropower to green up its electricity mix, but has also been deploying more solar systems. By installing 300 MW of new PV last year, it doubled its solar fleet.

The blossoming of the region’s solar markets can be attributed to a vibrant financing ecosystem, keen government support, an influx of experienced project developers and IPPs, and the increasing proliferation of innovative energy storage solutions. In addition, many corporates are increasingly eager to enter into PPA transactions to boost their ESG standard requirements and secure stable energy prices over the long run, offsetting price volatility risk. With good interconnection links (and plans to strengthen them even further), regional synergy, and many boundary-crossing players, the Solarplaza Summit Nordics remains a crucial platform for regional strategy-making and collaboration.

The event provides PV professionals with market insights from inspirational speakers, and extended networking opportunities throughout the conference as well as during the pre-conference networking dinner. Attendees will get the chance to connect with experts and gather vital updates on the future of the Danish, Swedish, Finnish, and Norwegian solar markets related to policy, project development trends, technological and O&M innovations, the PPA landscape, and financing opportunities for large-scale projects.
